History of Burt’s Bees Ownership
Burt’s Bees was founded by Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby in Maine back in 1984 selling bottled honey. As they grew they quickly expanded and eventually shifted the business to personal care products that use beeswax.
In the early 90’s a dispute lead to Burt leaving the day to day operations, soon after the company relocated to North Carolina.
Within a decade ownership of Burt’s Bees changed three times. First Roxanne purchased Burt’s share before the 90’s ended. Then in 2004 a private equity firm acquired 80% for just shy of 200 million dollars.
In 2007 Burt’s would be purchased by its current owner Clorox in a deal reportedly worth 925 million.
